What to Ask Any Sliding Door Company Before You Hire

Reviews tell you how a company treats people; a few direct questions tell you how it works. Ask whether the technician takes the panel out of the frame before quoting. It is the only way to see the roller assemblies and the track crown, and a company that quotes from the doorway is guessing.

Ask whether the rollers are matched to your frame or are a universal part. There is no universal patio door roller: housing width, pocket depth and adjustment screw position all vary by manufacturer and build year, and a substitute shimmed into the wrong pocket is the most common reason a repair comes back.

Ask what happens to the track. New rollers on a grooved track fail within weeks, so an honest quote either caps or replaces the track or shows you that it is sound. And ask for the price in writing before work starts, including what would change it. A number that moves on the day is the practice worth avoiding, whoever you choose.

It also helps to know how repairs go wrong elsewhere, because most complaints about sliding door work fall into the same few patterns. A universal roller is forced into a frame it was not made for and fails within a year. New rollers are fitted onto a grooved track and the door drags again in weeks. A latch is adjusted without correcting the panel height it depends on, so the door slides but never quite locks. Or a low phone quote is revised upward once the technician is in the house.

Each of those is avoidable, and each is a question you can ask before anyone arrives. Whichever company you choose, a specialist who removes the panel, matches the hardware to the frame, addresses the track and puts the price in writing will give you a door that runs properly for a decade or more.

One last practical point: keep whatever paperwork you are given. A written quote, the parts fitted and the warranty terms should all be on it, and the warranty should say plainly what it covers.
