Why will my sliding door not lock anymore?
In most cases the lock is fine and the panel has dropped. Worn rollers let the door sit lower, so the latch passes under the keeper instead of into it. Correcting the roller height usually brings the latch back into line — which is why we check panel height before touching the lock.
Can you make a sliding door more secure?
Yes, and it is one of the most worthwhile upgrades on a patio door. A properly fitted foot bolt, an anti-lift device that stops the panel being lifted out of the track from outside, and a solid replacement handle set with a working mortise latch together make a standard slider a genuinely difficult entry point.
Is a bar or dowel in the track good enough security?
Not really. A dowel stops the panel sliding but does nothing to stop it being lifted out of the track, which is the most common way a slider is defeated. It also scratches the track. Anti-lift hardware plus a working latch is both more effective and less damaging.
How much does a sliding door lock repair cost?
